Non-combat AI in Harem Dungeon

In Harem Dungeon, one of the biggest aspects of game progression is your relationship with your waifus outside of combat. In order to make each character feel memorable and distinct, I wanted to mix and match personality traits like "impulsive", "playful", "submissive", etc. The result is a system that can combine any number of modular "behaviors". Each behavior can react to any in-game event, such as dealing damage, taking damage, receiving a specific kind of stimulation, being approached by the player etc. Each behavior emits "reactions" which can result in relationship stat changes. Speaking of which, each waifu's relationship to the player is modeled by five stats:

  • Familiarity
  • Affection
  • Fear
  • Respect
  • Trust

As you interact with the waifus in the game, you will often be given different ways to convince them how to do things, for example, "asking nicely", coercion, force, and command. Each type of influence tactic has tradeoffs. For example, coercion works best when your character is spec'd appropriately and your target NPC is dumb, but if your coercion attempt is detected, you may lose a large amount of trust.

In addition to behaviors and relationship stats, waifus in Harem Dungeon also have memories. Specifically, they remember what you do to them and how it made them feel. For example, if you do something that they initially don't like, but actually makes them feel good, they may gradually start to change their opinion.

These systems are the foundation for making Harem Dungeon challenging, immersive, and diverse. Best of all, you will be able to create custom behaviors using the Content Workshop!
